Taking the scenic route

July24

We could be taking the toll road all the way to New York but we much
prefer the smaller highways as they offer better views and more
interesting sights. Yesterday we drove from Niagara to Rochester and
visited the house of George Eastman. Eastman is the father of modern
photography as he invented roll film and formed the Kodak company. His
house was fascinating and the tour guide really gave a great sense of
the kind of man he was. Later, we dined on dim sum before watching the
latest Woody Allen film in the cute Little Theatre.

This morning was another scenic route along highway 20 that skips
along the Finger Lakes and all the lovely towns along the way. The
scenery looks very like England apart from the roads and buildings.
You can see why the region is imaginatively called New England.

We are now enjoying a very good cup of coffee in Syracuse; a strange
town that feels like it was once great and is now trying to get itself
back on it’s feet.

Falling over the border

July23

Today was a busy one. We drove 4 and a half hours to Niagara Falls,
checked into our motel and then parked the car in town. We went
straight onto the Maid of the Mist boat which took us to the foot of
the falls where we got soaked by the spray and then headed across the
river to Canada to get our final passport stamp. Woo hoo!

Then after a wander around the Canadian side (that had much better
views) and a bite to eat we headed back the motel. Our feet hurt and
we are having a lie-in tomorrow. Great day though!

Fire!

July21

Today we had breakfast in the lovely town of Thurmont, Maryland before driving through some nice countryside and cute little farms into Pennsylvania.

We then headed to the very odd town of Centralia. You probably haven’t heard of it but we suggest you google it. The short story is that the coal seam underneath the town was accidentally set on fire and will now burn for hundreds of years. Because of this it has become a ghost town where you need to tread carefully and the ground is hot to the touch in places.

As it was raining, we have no photos of our own so below are some good ones we found via google.

Now in another nice town called Danville. Nearby places are: Manchester, Liverpool, Bath and Hanover. Early settlers were really smart when it came to new place names!
